I’m somewhat fanatical about being high-energy today – so much so that I often forget about all of the minor tweaks I’ve made to my daily routine. So, it’s always hard to attribute exactly what makes any given day high energy, given all of the variables.
For example, all week in Austin it’s been a mix of cold and hot, with yesterday being sunny and 68 and today being 30 degrees. I was able to go on a long walk in the sun yesterday and I’m sure that had something to do with my mood and energy being better than the average over the last few days. However, it’s hard to pinpoint.
A recent realization of mine is that my number one priority is my health, and I guess you would say that the whole purpose of good health is to be high-energy. So, in light of taking this more seriously, I decided to work on something that’s been a bit of a challenge for me which is the 1 or 2 PM slump. I often find my whole day feels great except for that one window, and I’ve had a hunch that it has something to do with some lack of consistency around what I’m eating, when, and in which order.
So, I decided to use this app, Daylio, to track my energy levels and activities each day.
Daylio let’s me take a photo and tag it with what I’ve been up to and how I’m feeling that day. It’s a very quick way to “check-in” and start to look for any patterns around how you feel. For example, I’ve been using it to track my mood/feeling after social media use.
I’m still exploring some specific things around my diet that might help. Paritcularly with my level and types of caffeine I’m having alongside with which foods.
One book on the subject I’ve been reading is “How to Heal Your Metabolism” by Kate Deetering. So, I’m playing with some small changes around adding more carbs and sugars to my diet.
I’ll be curious to see a bigger picture of what my energy looks like throughout the day as I get more tags logged.
Are you monitoring sleep?
I think about this energy issue a lot. And for me I think lack of quality sleep is my top challenge. But I’m having a hell of a time fixing that.
